Somme Centenary - Everton footballer who was a real war hero

Everton goalkeeper Leigh Roose was a real hero who sacrificed all for his country
Leigh Roose
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme. Fighting began on July 1, 1916 and finally came to a halt on November 18, 1916. It claimed more than 1.5 million lives. One was a remarkable Everton footballer. We republish his story.
Leigh Roose was a footballer and a hero. Not the glib kind of heroism that is celebrated in modern newspapers when a footballer scores a goal, makes a last ditch tackle or a goalkeeper dives bravely at a centre-forward’s feet.
Leigh Roose was a real hero.
He fought off German flamethrower attacks in the trenches at Pozieres in 1916, an act for which he was awarded the Military Medal, he was reported “missing presumed dead” after experiencing the hell on earth which was Gallipoli, and he did, eventually, lose his life – running at the enemy still firing his gun – at the Somme.Yet he is not a household name. And when his ultimate sacrifice was ceremonially recognised – as one of the 72,195 names inscribed on the immense war memorial at Thiepval – it was misspelled. The name Leigh Roose does not figure on that incredibly moving monument.Instead it is spelled L Rouse – an administrative error perpetrated earlier in the War, and an error which meant that for 87 years his family mistakenly believed he had died at Gallipoli.A lot more is known about Leigh Roose’s remarkable life today, largely as a result of Spencer Vignes’ outstanding biography published in 2007
Leigh Roose Partly as a result of Spencer’s probing, coupled with a campaign by family members and Welsh football historian Gil Jones, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission finally agreed to amend the spelling error on the Thiepval memorial – but only when the stone block which contains his name needs replacing. That could be years hence, but until that date Roose’s story deserve retelling.A colourful goalkeeper, he was one of the most famous stars of his day – and he briefly played for Everton. An extrovert personality, described by Vignes as “football’s first playboy,” he dated famous music hall stars like Marie Lloyd, refused to turn professional playing ‘only’ for expenses – which were considerable – and famously travelled by train to one match at Aston Villa, an engine he had commandeered himself containing one passenger – him.Signed after he had announced his retirement at the age of 26 – to study bacteriology at King’s College – he was asked by the Blues to deputise for the injured Bill Scott (his deputy George Kitchen had flu), not having played for seven months.Desperately short of match practice he made an uncharacteristic error on his debut against Sunderland and Everton lost 1-0.

The difference Ronald Koeman will make to Everton, according to Football Manager

The football management game simulated Everton's season under the Dutchman and this is what happened
Ronald Koeman will still be getting his feet under the table at Goodison Park and Finch farm, but Everton's season is already over - in this simulation by Football Manager. The boffins at Sports Interactive have assessed how the Blues will do using the same database that powers the management game. The good news is that changing manager from Roberto Martinez makes a positive difference, if not an enormous one.
How they finished
Everton finished the season in ninth place on 56 points, nine more than the season just gone and two places better off.Koeman’s side started the season strongly but struggled for form around the end of the year before going on a good run in the latter stages of the season.Notable results over the course of the campaign included a 2-2 draw with Tottenham on the opening day, a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Goodison Park and a 3-0 home win against Koeman's former club Southampton.
What about the cups?
The club made relatively early exits from both domestic cup competitions unfortunately.
In the FA Cup, the Blues were beaten 3-2 by Leicester in the fourth round at the King Pride stadium.
They were eliminated from the Capital One Cup by Norwich in the third round
Who did he buy?
Koeman brought in Gremio centre forward / attacker Luan, Newcastle’s goalkeeper Tim Krul and James Ward-Prowse, a centre midfielder from Southampton, for a combined £25.5 million.
What were his tactics?
Koeman’s preferred formation is a 4-2-3-1 with Luan a regular fixture in the starting XI
Top goalscorer
Romelu Lukaku stayed with Everton and was the team’s top goalscorer as he netted 22 over the course of the season.
Top player
John Stones was the team’s best performer with an average rating of 7.44
Plaque dedicated to football superstar Leigh Roose
His response for the next game against Derby County was to walk around the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, shaking hands with fans, apologising for his error, before keeping a clean sheet which included numerous outstanding saves, which after each one he bowed and saluted to the crowd, before finally pulling himself up onto the crossbar and sitting on the wooden beam during a break in play.
The crowd loved him.
A penalty save – in which he specialised – in his next match further endeared him to Blues fans.
Billy Scott was by now fit again, but Roose was immoveable. His arrival proved to be a turning point in the 1904/05 season. From languishing in mid table, 12 wins and a draw from their next 16 matches put the Blues on target for a league and cup double.Cup hopes were ended in an FA Cup semi-final replay defeat to Aston Villa, but with only six games left in the league Everton were four points clear. Then fate conspired. In November Everton’s match at Arsenal had been abandoned with 13 minutes remaining because of fog, with Everton leading 3-1 and both teams reportedly happy to continue.
Everton bizarrely agreed to a replay on Saturday April 22, just 24 hours after a home match against Manchester City.Presumably way back in November Everton officials had no idea they would be involved in a title race. But after losing 2-0 to City the tired players crammed into a London-train, a handful grabbed a few hours sleep in Leigh’s London apartment in Camden, then travelled to Arsenal where they lost 2-1.Leigh confronted club chairman Will Cuff afterwards and questioned the wisdom of playing two such important games in such a timeframe. In an era of marked class divisions when footballers were supposed to know their place, Cuff instantly dropped Roose and recalled Bill Scott.Roose refused to return north with his team-mates – and despite a letter of apology to Cuff once he had reconsidered his outburst – Roose’s Everton career was over after five months and 24 matches.A fleeting star – but an undoubted hero.He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery on the first occasion he saw action, the regimental history recording: "Private Leigh Roose, who had never visited the trenches before, was in the sap when the flammenwerfer attack began. He managed to get back along the trench and, though nearly choked with fumes with his clothes burnt, refused to go to the dressing station. He continued to throw bombs until his arm gave out, and then, joining the covering party, used his rifle with great effect."Promoted to the rank of lance corporal, Roose was killed, aged 38, towards the end of the Battle of the Somme the next month. The exact location and manner of his death remain a matter of dispute.

Everton close to deal for goalkeeper Stekelenburg

Ronald Koeman is closing in on the first signing of his reign as Everton manager, with Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on the brink of a move to Goodison. The 33-year-old Dutchman is expected to complete a switch to Merseyside over the weekend, with the Blues paying an undisclosed fee – believed to be under £1m.Stekelenburg worked under Koeman during a loan spell at Southampton last season, making 25 appearances on the South Coast. He has 54 caps for Holland, and was their first choice at both the 2010 World Cup, in which Bert Van Marwijk’s side reached the final in South Africa, and at the 2012 European Championships.Born in Haarlem, Stekelenburg started his career at Ajax, making more than 200 appearances before moving to Roma in 2011. He joined Fulham in 2013 but made just 21 appearances as the Cottagers were relegated from the Premier League in his first season.
The following season he was loaned to Monaco, before being signed by Koeman for the 2015/16 campaign, where he would deputise for Saints’ No.1 Fraser Forster.Koeman had told the ECHO how adding a goalkeeper to his ranks was essential following the departure of Tim Howard. Joel Robles is, at present, the only senior ‘keeper at the club, though Stekelenburg, assuming there are no last-minute hitches, could be in place when the first team squad reports for pre-season training at Finch Farm on Monday.Everton remain keen to add another goalkeeper to take over as first choice this summer. Forster, Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen and Tim Krul of Newcastle are among the names being considered.

Everton target Maarten Stekelenburg, the "attacking goalkeeper" who Koeman knows well

Dutch international worked with Blues boss at both Ajax and Southampton
It’s not the “statement” many Everton fans were hoping for, but the Blues are closing in on their first signing of the Ronald Koeman era.Maarten Stekelenburg will, barring any late drama, complete a move to Goodison over the weekend, the 33-year-old arriving to strengthen the club’s goalkeeping options – a priority for Koeman following the departure of Tim Howard at the end of last season.
Koeman knows him well, having given him his senior professional debut at Ajax as a teenager back in 2002. The Blues boss also managed Stekelenburg last season, when the Dutchman moved to Southampton on loan from Fulham.Everton still hope to add another ‘keeper to their ranks this summer – a move which will cast doubt over the future of Joel Robles, who finished last season as first choice. Stekelenburg, though, is seen as someone who can provide strong competition and adequate cover, and who fits the bill in terms of both style and experience. It is just six years since Stekelenburg played in a World Cup final, though his career since has been mixed, to say the least.Having left Ajax in 2011, he spent two seasons in Italy with Roma before following in the footsteps of another Dutch goalkeeper, Edwin Van der Sar, by moving to Fulham.“I hope to stay here a long time,” he said upon arriving at Craven Cottage, but his time in London would be both brief and unsuccessful.A shoulder injury sustained at Sunderland in his first Premier League appearance would keep him out for two months.By the time he returned to action, the club was in the midst of a relegation battle and Martin Jol, with whom he shared a strong relationship, was fighting for his job. Jol would be sacked soon after, with neither Rene Meulensteen nor Felix Magath able to halt the slide.Stekelenburg made 21 appearances in total that season, though he would finish the campaign behind David Stockdale as Fulham’s 13-year stay in the top flight ended. He would leave on loan for Monaco that summer. If that was a move supposed to relaunch his career, it didn’t work. Second behind the Croatian Danijel Subasic, he managed just eight outings, just one of which came in the league. It was, in his own words, “a bad season.”Then, in the summer of 2015, came the call from Koeman. Southampton had been rocked by a long-term injury to Fraser Forster, and Stekelenburg jumped at the chance to work with his former boss again.“He’s a great coach,” he said upon arriving at St Mary’s. “(Working under him at Ajax) was good. Hard training as well, you know! It’s all about football, but it’s relaxing as well.”With Forster sidelined until the New Year, Stekelenburg would make 25 appearances at St Mary’s – his best season since 2011/12.And though he would again end the campaign on the sidelines, his form has been sufficient to convince Koeman he can be part of his Everton ‘project’.Stekelenburg describes himself as “an attacking goalkeeper, who likes to build from behind.” In one interview, he talks of being “a typical Dutch goalkeeper” - tall, good with his feet and with a good, calm temperament. The last of his 54 caps for the Netherlands came in 2012, though he has not ruled out a return to the national team fold yet.He also admits that English football is yet to see the best of him. “Maybe it’s still to come,” he said with a smile upon joining Southampton.Maybe. Everton fans will certainly hope so, although the signs are that if Koeman gets his way, then Stekelenburg will find himself in a familiar position at Goodison – playing the role of understudy.

Blues go Dutch for Ronald Koeman

EVERTON have gone Dutch to welcome new boss Ronald Koeman to Goodison Park. A billboard at the Park End of the Blues stadium has been updated to show off a brand new message wecloming the Dutchman to Goodison, in the Everton manager’s native tongue.Containing a striking portrait of Koeman, with iconic images as a backdrop, of Koeman raising the European Championship trophy in 1988 when he was Holland captain, as a backdrop, the picture is accompanied with the message “Welkom Koeman”.In case it is necessary for the less linguistically gifted citizens of Merseyside, the translation “Welcome Ronald” is written in English beneath.Koeman has already visited Goodison Park since his appointment as manager last month, and will be at Finch Farm on Monday to oversee his first training session. The Blues will also kick off the new Premier League season at Goodison Park against Tottenham next month.

Former Everton midfielder Li Tie helping lead China's footballing revolution
1 Jul 2016

Liverpool Echo
If you were being kind, his time at Everton could be described as “underwhelming.”But back home in China, Li Tie is helping lead a footballing revolution. The former Blues midfielder – who made 40 appearances for the club between 2002 and 2006 – is the manager of Hebei China Fortune, who currently sit second in the China Super League behind Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Guangzhou Evergrande.Scolari, of course, threw his hat into the ring for the vacant England job this week – though one suspects Li Tie will not be doing similar.Still having worked as assistant to both Marcello Lippi and Raddy Antic, the 39-year-old is picking up some stellar managerial experience in an emerging league, and working with some impressive talents too.His Hebei squad contains Argentine international Ezequiel Lavezzi, signed at huge cost from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year, and the former Arsenal forward Gervinho. Stephane Mbia, once of QPR and latterly a Europa League winner with Sevilla, is also there, along with one-time Chelsea prodigy Gael Kakuta. There is no question that China, at present, is looking to buy its way to prominence. This week we have seen Hulk, the Brazilian international, join Shanghai SIPG in a deal worth a reported £46m. Watford, it has emerged, have turned down a £38m bid from the same club for striker Odion Ighalo.Others, such as the Brazilians Paulinho, Ramires and Alex Teixeira, and the Colombian forward Jackson Martinez, have made big-money moves East in recent months, while Everton hero Tim Cahill is still there, playing for Hangzhou Greentown.Last month the ECHO reported that there was interest from Chinese clubs in Blues striker Arouna Kone – news that will have been music to a lot of fans’ ears no doubt – while fellow misfit Oumar Niasse’s name has also been mentioned. But while China, keen to build its brand with ‘names’, offers a new market in which to offload unwanted players, there is also a challenge for European clubs such as Everton, who are looking to strengthen their squad significantly this summer. The money CSL clubs can offer, both to players and to clubs looking to sell, adds an extra dimension to the transfer market. The likes of Hulk, Teixeira, Ighalo or Ramires, for example, may have interested a club like Everton had they not already been tempted away.Asked this week if any player in the world was out of the financial reach of Chinese clubs, Eric Gao, the chief executive of iRENA, a company which represents 12 Super League clubs replied: “No.“I’m working closely with Beijing and Shanghai football clubs, I talk with some UEFA people and with clubs, they ask me ‘Eric, can you help us to find some agents who can buy some top players?’“Chinese clubs will pay much more, since lots of clubs compete with each other who can pay more right now in China.“That’s the reality. I know lots of good players, they receive two or three offers from Chinese clubs, the players will make more money at Chinese clubs, that’s true.”
Of course the lure of the Premier League, and the lure of Everton, remains. But with the Blues hopeful of making at least one “statement” signing this summer – Axel Witsel, a teammate of Hulk’s at Zenit St Petersburg, is one name linked - they will hope to avoid awakening any potential challenges from the Orient. In the meantime, Li Tie can continue to forge his reputation. Clearly, he’s making more of an impression as a manager than he ever did at Goodison.

New Everton signing Maarten Stekelenburg on easy decision to join Koeman

Maarten Stekelenburg believes the decision to become Ronald Koeman’s first Everton signing was an easy one. The 33-year-old moves to Goodison Park on a three-year contract after a fee believed to be under £1m was agreed with Fulham. The Dutch goalkeeper joins up with Koeman for the third time in his career, having worked with him during a loan spell at Southampton last season.Stekelenburg, who also spent time under Koeman at Ajax, admitted it was not a hard choice to make once he became aware of the Blues’ interest. “I’m very happy - things have moved very fast over the last couple days,” said the goalkeeper.“Koeman has come to Everton and he called me a few days after asking if I was willing to follow him. It wasn’t difficult to make that choice.“He’s one of the best coaches - he’s straight talking, he’s fair and he has confidence in me which counts as well.“I’ve been in England for a couple of seasons and I love the Premier League. It’s fantastic that I can stay.”Koeman, meanwhile, has hailed the ‘professionalism’ of his new signing – the first he has made since taking the job last month.“Obviously I know Maarten well having worked with him at two clubs before,” Koeman said.“I know through his professionalism, hard-working approach and personality he will fit in well with what I will be building at Everton.”Born in Haarlem, Stekelenburg started his career at Ajax, making more than 200 appearances before moving to Roma in 2011. Who could Everton target as their new no.1 this summer?

So the first signing of the Ronald Koeman era at Everton is done and dusted.Maarten Stekelenburg was not, it is fair to say, the name Blues fans were hoping for or expecting, but he is here. He will be at Finch Farm on Monday, and will link up for a third time with Koeman, under whom he worked at both Ajax and Southampton. At 33, and costing less than £1m, Stekelenburg represents an experienced, low-risk signing, designed to add cover and competition in an area in which Everton, let's be honest, are far from blessed. What is clear is that he won't be the only new goalkeeper arriving at Goodison this summer. Tim Howard's departure, and well-founded doubts over the suitability of Joel Robles, mean that Koeman will return to the transfer market before the new season. Here are some of the names that could, or indeed should, be under consideration.
The domestic options
Koeman said upon his unveiling at Everton that it may be difficult for him to return to Southampton to sign players. “Maybe it’s better I don’t make more fights with them,” he told his first press conference. That, taken at face value, would appear to rule out a move for Fraser Forster at this stage, although the 28-year-old fits the bill in just about every sense; proven in the Premier League, physically imposing and with his best years ahead of him.Likewise Jack Butland at Stoke, although a move for the 23-year-old would be complicated by his recovery from a fractured ankle, as well as Stoke’s unwillingness to sell.Another ‘keeper recovering from long term injury is Newcastle’s Tim Krul. The Dutchman, 28, is certain to leave St James’ Park this summer, with the Magpies already having secured a new cat in Matz Sels.Joe Hart’s reputation has taken a hammering during Euro 2016, though his CV is not one to be sniffed at. Were Pep Guardiola to decide to upgrade, the England man would have no shortage of takers. The same goes for Asmir Begovic, No.2 to Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea but a proven No.1 at Premier League level.Tom Heaton, captain of newly-promoted Burnley, is another name in the frame. He was capped by England earlier in the year, and was part of their Euro 2016 squad.
The overseas options
If Koeman prefers to cast his net a little wider, then expect the name Jasper Cillessen to crop up. The ECHO understands that the Ajax goalkeeper, first choice for the Netherlands, has been scouted extensively over the past 12 months, and that he would be available for around £12m.Elsewhere in the Eredivisie, PSV Eindhoven shot stopper Jeroen Zoet has helped his side to back-to-back titles, and at 25 represents one for the future as well as the here and now.Into Germany, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno, Augsburg’s Marwin Hitz and Cologne’s Timo Horn all have burgeoning reputations. Horn rejected a new contract earlier this year, and is understood to have a modest release clause.Another German, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been persistently linked with a move to England having failed to establish himself as No.1 with Barcelona, although Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu believes the 24-year-old will stay.Alphonse Areola enjoyed a stellar season with Villarreal on loan from PSG – although he looked unconvincing playing at Anfield in the Europa League. Would Diego Alves, the vastly-experienced Valencia keeper, be an option? Or what about Geronimo Rulli at Real Sociedad, seen by many as Argentina’s future No.1?In Italy Genoa’s Mattia Perin is seen as a future national team star, while Wojciech Szczesny will be allowed to leave Arsenal after a season on loan with Roma. Whether the Pole is of the calibre required, though, is another matter. Sassuolo’s Andrea Consigli and Lazio’s Federico Marchetti also have their fans. With Steve Mandanda seemingly set for Crystal Palace, Ligue 1 options include Stephane Ruffier of Saint-Etienne or Nigerian international Vincent Enyeama of Lille. Rennes’ Benoit Costil is another with suitors.Lots of names, lots of options. Koeman will hope to have his new No.1 in place well before the new Premier League season gets underway on August 13, with Stekelenburg and Robles offering competition, and youngster Chris Renshaw, signed from Oldham, developing in the Academy.

Manchester City prepared to win race for John Stones with £50m bid
Matt Law, Football News Correspondent
1 July 2016 Independent
Manchester City are prepared to pay up to £50million to land John Stones and are confident of signing the defender in time for him to  return from a post-Euro 2016 break to pre-season training with them.
Everton have placed the £50m valuation on Stones, but that has done  nothing to deter City and a firm bid is expected to be placed  imminently.   New City manager Pep Guardiola has earmarked Stones as a key part of  his revolution and his determination to get the 22-year-old was  strengthened by Aymeric Laporte’s decision to stay at Athletic Bilbao.   Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea have also been chasing  Stones, but City are confident that their willingness to spend so big  on the England international has effectively made it a one-horse race  for his signature.   City also believe Stones has already made his mind up that he wants to  move to the Etihad, with sources in the England camp claiming it was  an open secret during Euro 2016.   Stones did not play a single minute in the tournament, which was seen  as one of the catalogue of errors made by Roy Hodgson because the  former Barnsley youngster had been England’s best defender over the  warm-up games.

City are likely to start the bidding at under £50m, but have not  balked at the idea of eventually going that high to get their man.   Stones will comfortably become the most expensive defender in English  history, as his fee will outstrip the £34m Manchester United spent on  Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
Chelsea failed with four bids for Stones last year, the highest of  which was £37m, and new Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri  wanted to hold on to the player again.
But Moshiri has been convinced it will do the player nor the club any  good to keep him against his wishes for a second successive season, so  Everton will reluctantly sell when City match or get close enough to  their valuation.   Despite the fact he did not play, Stones has around three weeks off  after being at the Euros with England and the expectation is that a  deal with City will be completed in time for him to go straight into  pre-season training with his new club.   While Everton are now resigned to losing Stones, albeit for a very  good fee, Moshiri is determined to do everything in his power to keep  striker Romelu Lukaku at the club.

Royal Blue: Why Koeman must get Everton's sleeping talents firing again
2 Jul 2016 Liverpool Echo
By Neil Jones
Transfers are one thing, but Blues boss has challenge to get existing players back to their best
He officially starts work at Finch Farm on Monday morning, but Ronald Koeman will already be well aware of the size of the job he has inherited at Everton.
No wonder he fancied a break.
But while the challenge of wheeling and dealing, reshaping the Blues’ squad via the transfer market will offer the most intrigue over the coming weeks, the new boss will find an equally important task in his in-tray this summer.
How to awaken Everton’s existing talents from their slumber?
Of all the barbs thrown at Roberto Martinez during those drifting, unhappy final months in charge at Goodison, perhaps the most pertinent was the accusation that he had failed, quite miserably in all honesty, to get the maximum out of “the most talented squad Everton have had in years.”
Martinez had spoken repeatedly about the quality at his disposal. Whether it was the “incredible” Gareth Barry, the “phenomenal” Romelu Lukaku or the “unique football diamond” Ross Barkley, praise was lavished. John Stones could become “one of the greatest players England has ever seen,” while Tom Cleverley was “as good as you can get” technically. Even Aiden McGeady got the “phenomenal” treatment at one stage.  That was Martinez’s style, of course. Positivity was his currency – although fans had another word for his claims by the end. The trouble was; his words simply weren’t backed up by the performances he coaxed from those players.  Now, under Koeman, we will see just how talented Everton’s squad is.  Can he get the likes of Seamus Coleman, unplayable a couple of years ago, back to his best? Can he decode the enigmatic Gerard Deulofeu? And if Stones is to stay, will his levels rise under a new, more defensively competent structure?  Will we see the dogged, all-action James McCarthy of 2013/14, or the painfully limited, ineffective version of last season? Is Oumar Niasse as bad as he has looked in the handful of appearances he’s had so far?  What of Kevin Mirallas, whose relationship with Martinez deteriorated so obviously during the last 18 months? The suggestion is that Koeman will give the Belgian a chance, so we will see whether a change of manager brings about a change in purpose from the winger.
Roberto Martinez's relationship with Mirallas became increasingly fraught
Barkley, too, has a point to prove. Even if his struggles last season were a little overplayed – he still scored 12 goals, after all – it will be interesting to see if he can shrug off the hesitancy and indecision which has characterised his form in 2016 so far. Koeman, one imagines, will urge him to use his strength and running power more. He might even let him have a few shots from outside the box.
Leighton Baines is another who should benefit from a change of manager, though the presence of both Brendan Galloway and Luke Garbutt offers significant, and youthful, competition. Now 31 Baines says there is “no reason” why he can’t return to his very best form. A break from the manager who so bizarrely hung him out to dry over his “chemistry” comments cannot do that quest any harm.
Of course much will depend on what calibre of player Koeman can bring to Goodison over the next few weeks. A new first choice keeper is a must, and it is hard to imagine that August will pass without a central defender, midfielder and forward coming in, regardless of what happens with Stones and/or Lukaku.  But the transfer market is just one facet of the Dutchman’s job this summer. Just as important is his ability to reignite those already at the club.

Everton transfer rumours: John Stones wants to leave and Man City ready to pay £50m

Plus, claims that a deal has been agreed for Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel
Reports claim that Manchester City are prepared to pay £50m to land Everton's John Stones.
Both the Telegraph and Daily Express carry stories which say that the Etihad Stadium club believe they are in pole position for the Blues defender.  Stones was the subject of a dogged pursuit from Chelsea last summer with Everton rejecting three bids and a transfer request.  But the national newspapers say that Stones wants to leave Goodison again and that City are ready to make him the most expensive defender in British football history.  They say that the decision of Aymeric Laporte to stay with Athletic Bilbao has only served to stiffen City’s determination to sign 22-year-old Stones this summer.
Royal Blue: Why Koeman must get Everton's sleeping talents firing again  Manchester United, now managed by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourhino, were also said to be interested but their city rivals appear confident of signing Stones and say a “firm bid” will be lodged soon.  Squawka, meanwhile, have claimed that Everton have agreed a £30m deal with Zenit St Petersburg for Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel.

Blues linked with making a move for Belgium midfielder but Napoli are favourites
Everton’s interest in Axel Witsel is “concrete”, according to the midfielder’s dad.
The Blues have been linked with making a move for the Belgium midfielder who is ready to leave Zenit St Petersburg.  Thierry Witsel has been quoted as telling Italian radio station CRC that Everton are in a race with Serie A side Napoli for his son’s services.  “It’s true I met with (Napoli sporting director) Cristiano Giuntoli in Brussels.  “It was a positive discussion and there could be interest by both parties, so we’ll see how things evolve.

“Everton’s interest is concrete, like Napoli’s, so the negotiation is ongoing, and to see if the marriage happens we have to see the conditions and understand what is the best destination for the player.
“Napoli is a great club. They had Maradona amongst their protagonists so they don’t need to be praised.
“(Dries) Mertens spoke very highly of Napoli with Axel. He knows that going to Napoli would mean joining a big club and making a step forward in his career.”

Blues youngsters Jonjoe Kenny, Ryan Ledson and Callum Connolly hoping for Euro spot
Three Everton players are due to learn their England fate in the next 48 hours.
Ryan Ledson, Jonjoe Kenny and Callum Connolly are all hoping to be named in the Three Lions’ under-19s squad for this month’s European Championships.  England boss Aidy Boothroyd holds the third and final of his pre-tournament training camps tomorrow after which he will name his 18-man for the competition in Germany.  Ledson and Kenny were part of England’s victorious u-17 European Championship winning side two years ago but Connolly had to miss out as he completed his GCSEs.

But all three are hoping to be on the plane to Germany later this month for the tournament which starts on July 12.  England are in a group with France, Croatia and Holland and Boothroyd said: “We want to be involved in all of the best tournaments, as it’s what helps our players on their pathway to hopefully becoming full senior internationals.
Everton teenager Callum Connolly can cope with Merseyside derby ...
“If we can get those experiences, it’s something which helps them as players for club and for country.

Liverpool Ladies beat Everton in Merseyside derby cup tie

Lundh rose highest to head an Alex Greenwood corner home on the stroke of half-time before Ellie Stewart was sent off in the second half for the hosts
An Emma Lundh goal saw Liverpool edge past Merseyside rivals Everton – who had a player sent off – in a feisty FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup first round tie.  Lundh rose highest to head an Alex Greenwood corner home on the stroke of half-time before Ellie Stewart was sent off in the second half for the hosts.
Krystle Johnston volleyed over in a fine opening spell for the Blues as they held their own against their WSL 1 neighbours.  And they should have taken the lead on 38 minutes when Everton debutant Chloe Kelly turned brilliantly in the penalty area, but Siobhan Chamberlain palmed her shot wide.
Former Toffee Greenwood let fly from 25 yards for Liverpool just before the break but Kirstie Levell tipped her dipping effort over the bar before Lundh nodded home from the ensuing corner.
Substitute Rosie White should have doubled the Reds’ lead on 58 minutes but – on the turn – she shot just wide from 12 yards.  Blues keeper Levell then pulled off a superb reflex save to deny Sophie Ingle from point-blank range, as Liverpool started to dominate.  With 19 minutes to play Toffees sub Stewart was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on White.  Late on, Claudia Walker flashed a shot wide for Everton, but it was too little too late for the Blues.

Everton comment: If John Stones wants to leave them now is the time to sell
2 Jul 2016 Liverpool Echo
By Phil Kirkbride
Phil Kirkbride on Man City, the Blues and why another uncertain summer has to be avoided
By the time the transfer window shuts at the end of August, Everton will have played four times.
They will have faced Spurs, West Brom and Stoke City in the league and played in the EFL Cup second round.  And it’s four games where Everton could do without the hassle of not knowing if their star defender is staying or going.   Last summer’s gritty battle with Chelsea over John Stones was tiring and though the Blues emerged victorious, it took its toll.  It took its toll on Roberto Martinez, on the supporters and on the player himself.  The saga was an unwanted distraction and threatens to be one again this summer.   But if Stones, as we believe, still has his mind set on a move away from Goodison then Everton should let him leave.  If, after speaking with Ronald Koeman and being told of the club’s plans for the summer and beyond, he still feels the same then the time is right to sell.
Everton, with a transfer kitty bursting at the seams and a billionaire backer, don’t have to sell.
And Stones, let’s not forget, is contracted until June 2019.
Everton were planning to open talks on a new deal and hoped to have him down the spine of their team for years to come.  But even then they still knew they faced a fight to keep him.  That does not appear to have changed and with Manchester City reportedly prepared to make Stones the most expensive defender in British history, Everton should not fight this anymore.  Although the transfer fee is worth battling for.
John Stones latest: Everton tell Chelsea to forget
Farahd Moshiri and Bill Kenwright should get round the negotiating table with their oil-rich counterparts at City and thrash out a deal that suits them and them alone.  Few Evertonians want to lose Stones, he has the potential to be a genuinely brilliant centre-half, but if he wants to go then does anyone of a Blue persuasion have the energy for another scrap?
And maybe, the time as well.
Everton and Koeman are planning to make some serious moves in the transfer market this summer and the new manager will want to know if one of those will have to be for a centre-half.
That City are willing to spend big on Stones suggests that Everton have already intimated they will not accept anything other than top dollar.  Some supporters would demand the discussion starts (and not ends) at £50m and, rightly, cite the sale of David Luiz from Chelsea to PSG for that same price in 2014.
Stones may want to leave but that should not weaken Everton’s position in negotiations.
In fact, it should make it stronger.

Ian Doyle: Why Euro 2016 shows Klopp and Koeman are Mersey football's biggest players
Liverpool Echo
Ian Doyle
3rd July 2016
Euro 2016 may not have even reached the semi-final stage yet, but already we know the true winners of the tournament. Managers, head coaches, call them what you like. But rarely can a major competition have so emphatically underlined the influence of the main men in the dugout. You only need assess the contrast between England and Wales. Both, at least for now, are part of Great Britain. Both draw players primarily from the same league, who have come through the same academies and developed alongside similar standards with the identical issue of competing with foreign imports. Yet look at the difference in their performance in France. Few would argue that individually England have the better players. After all, that extra touch of class is what helped the Three Lions sneak past the Welsh during the group stage. But football is a collective. And bringing that together and making it function is ultimately the responsibility of one person: the manager. Which is why Chris Coleman is preparing Wales for a semi-final against Portugal while Roy Hodgson is out of a job. There are more factors here. Wales have such a small pool of players that they – similar to Iceland and national teams of the past such as Jack Charlton's Republic of Ireland and 1990s Norway – don't have the scope of, say, England or Germany to regularly rotate resources and, in the former's case, routinely act on a whim by calling up new talent before it's sufficiently proven.

In that respect, Wales are more like a club team. They can't bring in new players all the time, and have to work with that they have got. That builds stability, teamwork and trust. And it helps provide clear lines: everybody knows what they are doing, what they can do and, just as importantly, what they can't. This isn't just the reserve of Wales, of course. Look at the job Antonio Conte has done with Italy, extracting the best from hardly a stellar group of players. Certainly, Chelsea will be revived under his tutelage. Portugal, for all their naysayers, are doing the job asked of them And look how Joachim Low has kept Germany consistently evolving while remaining among the front-runners at every major tournament. All of these teams have an identity. They unashamedly embrace who they are. Wales have gained confidence from this approach in much the same way England lost confidence by being coached to forget what they are good at. So for all the talk of big-money signings and expensive sales, the most important figures in Merseyside football over the coming season will be Jurgen Klopp and Ronald Koeman. The manager is boss once more. Baines ready to step up on Koeman It's fair to say 2015-16 wasn't been the best season in the career of Leighton Baines. First there was the injury that ruled him out for the first four months. Then there was the reaction to seemingly innocuous comment about Everton's lack of on-field chemistry that set in motion a series of events that ended with Roberto Martinez being sacked.

And, on top of all that, being dragged down by the Blues' general malaise cost him a place in England's Euro 2016 squad. Actually, that last negative could well turn out to prove a positive given the hostile reaction to the national team's rubbishness. Baines, though, will be more concerned by events at Goodison. New boss Ronald Koeman isn't exactly short of left-back options, with Brendan Galloway, Bryan Oviedo and Luke Garbutt also at his disposal. The competition for places will be fierce, especially with everyone presumably starting with a clean slate and Koeman an open mind. But the manner in which the Dutchman transformed the career of left-back Ryan Bertrand at Southampton will offer Baines encouragement.Aged 32 in December, he will be the first to admit he is approaching the veteran stage of his career, now entering the 10 season of his Blues career. That experience and Goodison knowhow are qualities Koeman will be wise to utilise as he gradually get his feet under the table. With the Tim Howard, Tony Hibbert, Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar all departed, Baines has been elevated to one of Everton's senior squad members. And as his unwitting part in push Martinez out the exit demonstrates, the left-back's words are almost as telling as his actions on the field.

Mata, Witsel, Carvalho - why Everton are suddenly being linked with so many players this weekend
Liverpool Echo
3rd July 2016
Greg O'Keeffe
As if Everton's promise of resurgence under Farhad Moshiri and Ronald Koeman wasn't gathering enough pace anyway, this weekend has turned it up a notch. The Blues have been linked with a series of top players such as: (deep breath), Juan Mata, Axel Witsel, William Carvalho, Daley Blind and Asmir Begovic, but why the sudden explosion of rumours? The Dutchman has just finished a pre-arranged holiday in Portugal, his third break of the summer, where he spent the week with his mobile phone close to hand as he plots for next term. Now he's ready for business and along with brother Erwin will be at Everton's training ground stepping-up the process of assembling his squad for next term. It is common knowledge in football that the Blues want to bolster their squad with at least one marquee signing, and agents are whetting their lips at the prospect. They want to get their clients to a club that pays the type of hefty wages the Blues are prepared to fork out.So don't be surprised if the big name links just keep coming this week.

Everton chase Manchester United's Juan Mata as he finds himself surplus to Jose Mourinho's requirements again
Sam Wallace

3rd July
The Telegraph
Everton are trying to convince Juan Mata to join Ronald Koeman’s revolution at Goodison Park, with the Spain international aware that he has no future at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.
The 28- year-old is not in the plans of Mourinho who sold him to United in January 2014 during his second spell at Chelsea. The new United manager’s view of the attacking midfielder has not changed from two years ago when he regarded him as too slow to be at the heart of the attacking element of his team.   The Spain international was not included in his country’s Euro 2016 squad and last played for his country in the friendly against England last November. The offer is currently round £20 million but there is competition for his signature and the picture is not yet clear. The and at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund this summer has demonstrated where Mourinho sees the future of the position that that Mata favours. Nevertheless, Mata was a regular with Louis van Gaal and scored in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace in May.  Koeman was in charge of Valencia when Mata was in his first season there in 2007-2008. Mata was part of the Valencia side managed by Koeman that won the Copa del Rey in 2008 although Koeman was sacked in April after just six months in charge. Mata had four seasons at Valencia before joining Chelsea in 2011 where he was twice player of the year before Mourinho sold him.  Despite featuring in every single Premier League game last season - and finishing as the club's third top-scorer in all competitions behind Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial - Mata is unlikely to survive Mourinho's overhaul of the United squad. Having settled well in England in his five years, a move to another Premier League club is likely to suit all parties.

Everton fans are getting excited about this one.
Stories linking the Blues with Juan Mata aren't new, but the strength of the most recent links certainly is.
French journalist Floura Mussy got Evertonians in a frenzy on Sunday when she tweeted that the Spain midfielder was heading to Goodison in a £25m deal.  She then got tongues wagging further by claiming that Zlatan Ibrahimovic getting Mata's number eight shirt at Old Trafford further underlined that the midfielder was Merseyside bound.  The Manchester Evening News later ran a piece on the odds of Mata joining the Blues being slashed.  Coral have the Toffees as 4/9 favourites for his signature this summer, while Tottenham are 8/1. Arsenal, Sevilla and Dortmund are 14/1 to sign him.

Earlier today we explained why the Everton rumour mill has gone into over-drive this weekend.
And it shows no sign of stopping.  The Daily Telegraph's chief football writer Sam Wallace also says Koeman wants to resume the relationship with Mata which they first established while the Blues boss was in charge at Valenca.  Mata was part of the Valencia side that Koeman steered to a Copa del Rey triumph in 2008.  Wallace also reckons Koeman is keen on another reunion, this time with Graziano Pelle who is fresh from Italy's Euro 2016 exit.  Wallace claims that Chelsea are also interested in the 30-year-old, who is unlikely to be offered a new contract by Southampton with just a year left on his current deal. Simon Jones in the Mail Online says Everton want Chelsea stand-in goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.  And the Express says AC Milan want Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, after the Blues interest in the Croatian cooled.  But the Independent's Samuel Lovell says Everton are very interested in another midfielder, Zenit's Axel Witsel and may have to fight it out with rivals Liverpool for his signature.

Everton want supporters pictures and memories to use on Goodison's revamped concourse
Everton want to use images of fans and their memories of supporting the Blues as part of Goodison Park's summer revamp.  The pictures and words will help create the ground's new concourse artwork, set to be unveiled for the 2016/17 season, with supporters playing a pivotal role in the process.
Blues fans have been at the heart of the project from the outset, with the club's fans’ forum heavily involved in the design process for the proposed changes to the exterior of the stadium that have been submitted to Liverpool City Council for planning approval.  Now club officials want your favourite Goodison memories, stories and treasured photos of life as a Blue to become part of the Old Lady's makeover.    And every memory or photo shared will give fans the chance of being entered into a draw to win a 16/17 home shirt signed by Ronald Koeman.  So dig out your most cherished photos – the images that illustrate most perfectly your love and affinity for Goodison and the Blues.

The Blues also want your written memories of coming to the game - funny stories or anecdotes that are special to you, moments that define why you are an Evertonian.  To submit them head for the official site.

Manchester United transfer news: Juan Mata considers £20m Everton switch in wake of Jose Mourinho appointment
Mata was forced to leave Chelsea for £37.1m in 2014 despite winning the Player of the Year award the previous season as Mourinho ruthlessly cut the Spain international adrift at Stamford Bridge
By   Samuel Stevens
Monday 4 July 2016 Independent
Everton are reportedly set to launch an audacious bid to sign Juan Mata from Manchester United as the Spaniard comes to terms with Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Old Trafford.  Mata was forced to leave Chelsea for £37.1m in 2014 despite winning the Player of the Year award the previous season as Mourinho ruthlessly cut the Spain international adrift.  The 28-year-old struggled to replicate his best form under former United manager Loius van Gaal, often stifled by strait-jacket defensive tactics, but has seen his stock tumble even lower following Mourinho’s appointment.  According to the Daily Telegraph, Everton have offered in the region of £20m to save him from another year on the side-lines but face competition from a host of clubs across the continent.   Ronald Koeman, the Everton manager, is expected to flex the financial muscle afforded to him by new owner Farhad Moshiri at Goodison Park ahead of the new Premier League season but it appears unclear if he will succeed with enticing Mata to Merseyside.
Mourinho has already completed the signings of defender Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer as he continues his redesign of the squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal.   Ibrahimovic signed a one-year contract, with the option for a second season, on Friday after leaving French champions Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer while Bailly was ensnared from Villarreal in a deal which could cost up to £30m.

Ronald Koeman recalls Everton players for pre-season early to kick-start new era

Blues players returned to Finch Farm this morning as Koeman runs rule over squad
Muhamed Besic of Everton returns for pre-season training at Finch Farm on July 4, 2016
Ronald Koeman has revealed why he brought the start of pre-season forward.
Everton had initially been scheduled to return for training on Thursday but the new Blues will hold the first session of the summer this morning.  And Koeman was keen for Everton’s first-team and under-21s to return at the same time so he could run the rule over both squads at once before they part for separate warm weather training camps next week.  “I’m very much looking forward to getting down to work,” Koeman said.  “I’m extremely full of energy after a long summer and the players have had a lot of holidays as well.  “That’s one of the reasons I decided to change the date for starting the pre-season because it was planned in for July 7 and we changed it to July 4 because I think the best pre-season is five or six weeks of planning.  “After a long holiday, the boys need to work and to get back fit to play football.”  Everton’s Euro 2016 players, plus Ramiro Funes Mori who played in the Copa America, have been given an extended break.  But the bulk of the squad arrived at Finch Farm this morning to meet Koeman and his backroom staff.  “With a new technical staff, we need to show them how we will work together,” Koeman added. “We will look at organising in the training sessions, we will have some good friendly matches and it’s all about preparing the team of the first Premier League game.
Luke Garbutt returns for pre-season training at Finch Farm  “In pre-season, you get time to know all the players, to know the young players and, okay, you have the training sessions, but around the training sessions you have time enough to have a coffee with them and to have a talk to them.
Joel Robles returns for pre-season training at Finch Farm  “Of course, they need to know the manager, they need to know the rest of the technical staff and we need to know the players, the characters of the players and that’s important. You get that time more in pre-season.”

Everton are runaway favourites with bookies to sign Juan Mata

The Spaniard is looking set to leave Old Trafford this summer
With Juan Mata looking more and more likely to leave Manchester United this summer - and Ronald Koeman having managed him at Valencia - it was only a matter of time before he was linked to Everton.
So far, there have only been whispers around Merseyside of potential interest from the Blues, but that hasn't stopped the bookies reacting.  The odds on Mata leaving United have been slashed across the board - with Everton becoming the runaway favourites and the most likely destination according to any bookmakers offering odds.  Coral announced on social media yesterday that they were offering odds of 4/9 of Mata being at Goodison Park after this summer transfer window.

Mata, Witsel, Carvalho - why Everton are suddenly being linked with so many players this weekend
The betting site are offering odds of 4/1 of the player staying with Manchester United and 8/1 of the Spaniard joining Tottenham Hotspur.  SkyBet are also offering odds on where Juan Mata is likely to be after this summer's transfer window - with Everton again leading the way at an eye-watering 1/4.
Manchester United are 5/1 to keep the midfielder according to SkyBet - with Barcelona surprisingly their third most likely option at 14/1.  Meanwhile, other websites are offering odds on Juan Mata's next club if he were to definitely leave Manchester United.  PaddyPower make it 1/3 that the attacking midfielder will be joining Everton, with PSG at 5/1 and one of the Spaniard's old clubs Valencia at 7/1.
Nailed on then? The bookies never get it wrong do they? Apart from Brexit. And Iceland. And Wales. And Leicester City ...

Swiss forward out to impress new boss Koeman on his return from Euros
Shani Tarashaj will officially start his Everton career in two weeks’ time.
The January signing from FC Grasshoppers Zurich is set to join upo with the Blues squad on Monday, July 18.  Tarashaj was part of Switzerland’s Euro 2016 squad and made one appearance, coming off the bench in their group game with Romania in Paris.  The 21-year-old was signed in a £3m by former boss Roberto Martinez but immediately loaned back to Grasshoppers for the rest of the season.
Tarashaj did visit the club’s Finch Farm training ground in April to undergo medical checks and tests ahead of his move.  But when the young Swiss star, who had been attracting interest from Inter Milan and Juventus, returns in two weeks’ time he will have to impress new boss Ronald Koeman.

Everton transfer rumours: Blues linked with Jesus, blow over Nigerian pursuit

A round-up of transfer rumours and speculation from around the web
Sorry everybody, but it's the one on the left that Everton are being linked with
Everton are back in training, and according to the rumour mill they're about to sign 65 players too.
Jesus Gamez is the latest name in the frame. The 31-year-old is a right-back with Atletico Madrid, and the Spanish website Fichajes.net say that both Everton and West Ham are keen to sign him this summer.
Atleti boss Diego Simeone is said to be willing to part with the former Malaga man, and that a fee of 6m Euros would be enough to secure his services.  One player who won't be coming to Goodison this summer is CSKA Moscow forward Ahmed Musa, who is set to join Premier League champions Leicester City in a club-record deal.  BBC Sport have reported this, and state that the 23-year-old Nigeria international has rejected the chance to join Southampton, West Ham and Everton.  CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky admitted the Nigerian, who can play as winger or striker, is on his way out of the club.  "If you look at the way things are done over there, you'll see he is a player just made for English football."  Elsewhere, there are links with Asmir Begovic (Daily Mail) and Graziano Pelle (Telegraph), while the Express, you will be aware, have said that Everton will tell Romelu Lukaku he has to stay at the club, and will place a £75m price tag on him in order to ward off potential suitors.  We'll see.

Everton considering ambitious £17m swoop for Kasper Schmeichel
4 Jul 2016 Liverpool Echo
By Greg O’Keeffe
Leicester City goalkeeper Schmeichel is on a list of high-profile targets being considered
Everton will explore the possibility of prising Kasper Schmeichel from Champions Leicester City.
The 29-year-old is on a list of high-profile targets being considered to succeed Tim Howard as the Blues new Number one.  They would face a challenge in convincing the Dane to abandon the lure of Champions League football at the King Power stadium, where he played every minute of the Foxes' historic title-winning campaign.  But Everton, who have also discussed other targets including Jasper Cillessen of Ajax, would be able to provide a considerable financial incentive.  Schmeichel currently earns £35,000-a-week with the Midlanders and has two years left to run on his deal, but could hope to more than double that at Goodison.  The Denmark international is believed to have a £17m release clause in his contract, and after keeping 15 clean sheets last term is considered to be at his peak.
Schmeichel already has a North-West base, in the Greater Manchester village of Hale, and is thought to be open to the possibility of a move to Merseyside thanks to the ambition of majority investor Farhad Moshiri and the appeal of working under Ronald Koeman.
A bright new Everton era has arrived in the shape of Ronald Koeman and Farhad Moshiri
Leicester have already tacitly acknowledged that they may be without the shot-stopper next term and last month signed German World Cup winning goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.  The 27-year-old joined from Hannover 96 for an undisclosed fee on a four-year-deal.  Koeman, meanwhile, has already boosted his goalkeeping options by signing Maarten Stekelenburg, 33, from Fulham.

Everton target Sheffield United teenager Dominic Calvert-Lewin

By Phil Kirkbride
Blues lining up £1m deal for young forward
Everton are in line to sign teenage forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Blues look set to agree a £1m deal for the 19-year-old from Sheffield United.
Calvert-Lewin has been with the League One club for over 10 years and signed a new long-term contract last year.  But Everton are understood to have made a move for the talented youngster and could agree a deal that would see them pay £1m up front.  Sheffield-born Calvert-Lewin was sent out on loan to League Two side Northampton last season, making almost 30 appearances and hitting 10 goals.
And on his return to Bramall Lane, Calvert-Lewin made nine League One appearances for his hometown club.   Should Everton seal a deal for the teenager he would join the club’s under-21s set-up.
The Blues second string have already added Coventry City striker Bassala Sambou and Oldham Athletic goalkeeper Chris Renshaw to their ranks this summer.

A fan wrote to Everton asking why he should support them - and their response was brilliant

Aldin Karabeg wrote to all 92 English clubs asking which one he should support - and the Blues' response was fantastic
When a football fan wrote to all 92 English asking which of them he should support - I bet he didn't expect a reply THIS good.  Bosnian supporter Aldin Karabeg emailed every club in all of the top four tiers of English football asking for reasons why they deserve his support and posted his resulting responses on Reddit .  In fact, only 10 clubs actually replied to Aldin's message - and of course Everton were always going to be one of them.  Can't help but notice that Liverpool didn't reply - but Barnet and Cambridge did...  Anyway, out of the replies that Aldin did receive, the Blues' response was by far the best, and the most detailed.  Not only making reference to the club's famous motto, Everton went on to give Aldin numerous reasons to support the club and gave him a list of 'famous firsts' that belong to the Blues.
Have a look at the reply below, it is brilliant:
Thank you for writing to Everton Football Club.
Everton……The best team in the world. Evertonians are born not made. You don't understand what it is to love Everton unless you actually do, they're more than just a football team.  The history of Everton Football Club is so much more than the players who have graced the hallowed Goodison Park turf.
There's more to Everton than the trophies in the cabinet; the Toffees have been constant innovators in the footballing world, ceaselessly striving to be the best, and the first to accomplish new feats, while establishing new norms. The Nil Satis Nisi Optimum ("Nothing but the best is good enough") motto could not be more appropriate.

Who is Everton target Dominic Calvert-Lewin? Everything you need to know
5 Jul 2016
By Adam Jones
Liverpool Echo
Everton are interested in bringing Sheffield United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Goodison Park .You might be forgiven for not knowing a lot about the youngster - but what is there to know about him? We've got you covered. Here's a bit more information about the Blues target.
Background
Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined the Sheffield United academy in 2005 and stayed there throughout his youth career. After spending 10 years with the club, the striker signed a long term deal in April 2015.In the same month, after impressing for the club's Under-21s, Calvert-Lewin made his professional debut when coming on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient.
From August 2015, the youngster enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Northampton Town until January - making almost 30 appearances and bagging 10 goals in his time at the club, including scoring on his debut in the League Cup against Blackpool.Calvert-Lewin then returned to Sheffield United - where he made 11 senior appearances without scoring.
What kind of player is he?
All in all, it seems like the youngster is a very good prospect for the future if he maintains his current progress. He will be used in Everton's under-21 set up if the club sign him - for a deal worth around £1 million.Calvert-Lewin has strength, good skill and - as his goal-scoring record up to this point shows - a good eye for the back of the net.All of which will stand him in good stead for
What have people said about him? There is no shortage of people who speak highly of the 19-year-old.Nigel Clough, who was Sheffield United manager between 2013 and 2015 was one of them, and he says that the youngster could have a great future ahead of him if he keeps up his good work.“Dom is great at holding the ball up,” he said.“He’s a big lad who is good technically for the stage he’s at and he’s going to win headers against anybody. He’s got an incredible spring.“Providing Dom continues to work hard and apply himself, which we are sure he will, then he should have a good future ahead of him.”Another ex-Blades boss Nigel Atkins was also very impressed by the youngster. He said that the spell on loan at Northampton benefited him a lot - and talked about how Calvert-Lewin caught his eye in a training session. He said: "We were very impressed with him in pre-season."That spell out [on loan] has done him good, which is important."“He took the ball with his back to goal, controlled it and popped an overhead kick straight in the top corner. Brilliant stuff.”

Everton hand Ronald Koeman summer transfer reins as they wait for director of football

Ronald Koeman is driving Everton’s transfer dealings this summer as the club take their time over the appointment of a director of football. The new Blues has handed billionaire investor Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright a summer wish-list as he looks to reshape his squad ahead of the new season. Koeman made goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg his first signing last week and the club are understood to be in talks with Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel.Everton remain committed to appointing a director of football but are refusing to rush the process after hopes of landing transfer guru Monchi faded. Koeman has extensive experience of working under a sporting director and last month told the ECHO he was in favour of the model being implemented at Goodison. He said: “I think it is always important for the club, in the long-term story, to have a football man in the club.“You can call it ‘head of scouting’, you can call it ‘director of football’ because that is important for the club in the long-term and that is no problem for me.”Kenwright has also confirmed that the club are looking at candidates for the role who will have a huge say in Everton’s recruitment policy. But until an appointment is made, the Blues have asked Koeman to identify summer transfer targets.

Everton have moved ahead of Napoli in the race for Axel Witsel, according an insider on the deal. Intermediary Francesco Marseglia has been quoted by Italian radio as saying that the Belgium midfielder has snubbed an offer from Napoli.Everton are ready to offer the 27-year-old a major wage increase in a bid to tempt him from Zenit St Petersburg.Napoli are able to offer Champions League football this season but the Serie A side fear they being out-muscled by Everton’s new found wealth. “Axel is currently further away from Napoli,” Marseglia is reported to have told Radio Crc. “The offer wasn’t really given a lot of consideration.“Everton might even go above €4m net in salary.“If you look at the financial aspect, that’s the right move, but in terms of career I’d choose Napoli every time, even putting the Champions League to one side.“Napoli are an ambitious club, they’re growing every year, always taking more important players. Everton don’t seem like a great team.”Marseglia went on to say that Witsel is keen to bide his time before making a decision on his future.“I don’t know exactly what the situation is, in my opinion he wants to take his time because he’s not yet convinced about what to do. He can either accept the English club or wait for an even bigger club,” he added.

Everton will have to smash transfer record to land Schmeichel - and that might not be enough
By Rob Tanner |  Posted: July 05, 2016
Leicester Mercury
Everton would have to smash the English transfer record for a goalkeeper if they hope to land Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, writes Rob Tanner. And even then it may not be enough to convince City to sell or Schmeichel to move to Goodison Park. The Liverpool Echo has reported that the Toffees, buoyed by the cash injection of their new owner, Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri, are preparing a £17 million offer for Schmeichel - around the same amount as Manchester United were said to have paid Atletico Madrid for David De Gea in 2011, which is the current English record. However, City are determined to keep the Premier League title-winning squad together as they prepare to defend their title and Schmeichel played an integral part as City's vice-captain and regular number one.Schmeichel has already confirmed to Danish media he is in talks with City over a new contract, stating at the start of June that the talks were progressing well."Negotiations are ongoing and everything is positive right now," he said. Schmeichel has repeatedly said he was happy at City having seen his career rocket at the King Power Stadium since his arrival in 2011.In that time Schmeichel has been an ever-present as City have risen from the Championship to become English champions, and he has established himself as the first choice goalkeeper for Denmark. He also faces the prospect of fulfilling his ambition of playing in a Champions League, something Everton cannot offer him at this time.Schmeichel is expected to link up with his team-mates again in Austria next week after being given extra time off following international duty at the end of last season. There he will meet up with his new goalkeeping colleague, Germany international Ron-Robert Zieler, who joined City earlier in the summer from Hannover. The World Cup winner was recruited after Mark Schwarzer was released as a free agent.

Council to fund new Everton FC mini-stadium - in return for higher Finch Farm rents
5 Jul 2016

Liverpool Echo
A new mini-stadium is set to be built at Everton’s training ground - but the club will be asked to be higher rents in return. The stadium, for the club’s academy teams, is among a series of planned improvements at Finch Farm which Liverpool City Council is being asked to fund. The authority, which signed a £13m deal in 2013 to buy the training complex, said the increased rent would go towards supporting frontline services. On Friday, the council’s cabinet will consider whether to pay for a new recuperation block for first team players, as well as a “show pitch” with spectator seating. The “show pitch” would enable Everton to play home U21 fixtures there, rather than at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium.Other works set to be paid for by the council include a new education hub, a new groundsman building, the conversion of the existing groundsman building for “classroom space and media uses” and extra car parking spaces.
A report ahead of the meeting states: “EFC have since approached the City Council requesting landlord improvements be made to the property to satisfy their usage requirements.“EFC, at their cost, have secured planning permission from Knowsley Council for all of the works and the works are due for completion shortly.”Everton is in a long-term lease deal with the council and has to pay rent to use Finch Farm.A council spokesman said: “The proposed investment will be paid back through additional rental income over the term of the lease.“This is a commercial arrangement which is an exceptionally good deal for council tax payers as we can reinvest the profits to benefit the city’s economy and frontline services.“It is part of the Mayor’s Invest to Earn strategy which has so far delivered 1,600 new jobs, attracted £150m of additional funding and is generating £3m per year to support essential services.”At the time of the £13m deal, it was reported that Everton will have to pay the deal’s value – and more – back to the council in the long term.Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said the council had used its “borrowing power” – which offers it favourable interest rates – to buy the Halewood site. The planned mini-stadium is similar to the one used by Manchester City at their Etihad campus.

The “show pitch” would enable Everton to play home U21 fixtures there, rather than at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium.  Other works set to be paid for by the council include a new education hub, a new groundsman building, the conversion of the existing groundsman building for “classroom space and media uses” and extra car parking spaces.  A report ahead of the meeting states: “EFC have since approached the City Council requesting landlord improvements be made to the property to satisfy their usage requirements.  “EFC, at their cost, have secured planning permission from Knowsley Council for all of the works and the works are due for completion shortly.”
A council spokesman said: “The proposed investment will be paid back through additional rental income over the term of the lease.  “This is a commercial arrangement which is an exceptionally good deal for council tax payers as we can reinvest the profits to benefit the city’s economy and frontline services.
“It is part of the Mayor’s Invest to Earn strategy which has so far delivered 1,600 new jobs, attracted £150m of additional funding and is generating £3m per year to support essential services.”

At the time of the £13m deal, it was reported that Everton will have to pay the deal’s value – and more – back to the council in the long term.  Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said the council had used its “borrowing power” – which offers it favourable interest rates – to buy the Halewood site.  The planned mini-stadium is similar to the one used by Manchester City at their Etihad campus.  Everton were approached for comment.

Everton rumours: Lukaku wants to stay and reckons Blues can make Champions League

Lukaku contemplating surprise u-turn over Everton stance
Everton's Romelu Lukaku might be feeling a bit silly
Is Romelu Lukaku about to perform a climb down and stay at Everton?
If reports in the Daily Mirror are to be believed, then yes he is.  The Mirror claim Lukaku is ready to commit his future to the Blues as he believes Farhad Moshiri's arrival means they are capable of qualifying for the Champions League under Ronald Koeman.  David Anderson's report also says the striker is in line for a bumper new contract, with talks to take place in the coming weeks.
Lukaku, of course, has been rather outspoken in his desire to move to an elite club this summer. But with Everton always likely to demand well in excess of £50m for the 23-year-old, have potential suitors been frightened away?  Arsenal were the latest club linked with a move for Lukaku, but it remains to be seen whether he opts to stay and commit to Everton.
Another one to watch could be Iceland Euro 2016 star Ragnar Sigurdsson.
The centre back scored in the now-infamous win over England, and is, according to Guardian journalist Ed Aarons, attracting interest from a host of Premier League clubs – including Everton, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Watford, Leicester and Spurs.
Sounds like somebody has an active agent...
Napoli are also interested in signing Axel Witsel from Zenit
The Axel Witsel story rumbles on, with the Mirror stating that Everton “believe they have won the race” for the Belgium midfielder.  Interestingly, suggestions in Italy are that the Blues' pursuit of Napoli-target Witsel are having an adverse effect on Liverpool's bid to sign Udinese midfielder Piotr Zielinski, with Napoli now stepping up their own interest in the Pole.
Wales' Hal Robson-Kanu celebrates scoring his side's second goal of the game during the UEFA Euro 2016, quarter final match at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, Lille.  The Daily Mail and the Express, meanwhile, claim that Wales striker Hal Robson-Kanu is a target. They're also, apparently, looking at me after hearing about a similar goal I scored on Buckley Hill back in 1998...  Honest.

Koeman wants Pelle at Everton - but Blues face competition for Southampton striker
5 Jul 2016 Liverpool Echo
By Phil Kirkbride
Blues have held preliminary talks over Italy international, who is interesting clubs in Europe and China
Ronald Koeman has set his sights on Southampton striker Graziano Pelle - but Everton face serious competition for his services.  Koeman wants to be reunited with the forward who first played for him at Feyenoord as he looks to bolster the Blues' attacking options ahead of the new season.  The ECHO understands that preliminary talks have taken place over a potential move to Goodison but Everton are not the only club keen on the Italy international.  Clubs in Europe and China are interested in the Saints striker and would be willing to offer him a major wage increase to sign him.
Southampton insist Pelle is not for sale but even if their stance softened they would be sure to make the Blues pay a hefty transfer fee for the 30-year-old Italy striker - even though he only has one year left on his contract at St Mary's.  And if Everton keep hold of first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku, the club's powers may baulk at having to pay a reported £16m to prise Pelle from the south coast.  Pelle is currently on holiday after Italy were knocked out of Euro 2016 on penalties by Germany on Saturday night and will not make a decision on his future until he returns.
Koeman rates the former Sampdoria striker highly and sees him as providing ideal support to Lukaku, who struck 25 goals in all competitions last season.  But the Dutchman may yet have to convince Everton's hierarchy that Pelle is worth the money that Southampton would ultimately demand.
Koeman knows he needs to bolster the squad's forward line even if Lukaku stays with Arouna Kone and Oumar Niasse having so far struggled to convince.   Niasse is determined to stay and fight for his Everton future although Kone has been attracting interest from China.

Everton right to sack Martinez and get Koeman, says Leon Osman

Former Blues midfielder admits club had "lost its way" under former boss
Everton FC v Southampton Premier League match at Goodison Park Liverpool. Leon Osman
Leon Osman says Everton were right to sack Roberto Martinez – and backed Ronald Koeman to succeed at Goodison Park.  The midfielder left Goodison Park last month after 19 years with the Blues, and is currently looking for a new club.  The 35-year-old made just 16 appearances in all competitions last season, and saw first hand the demise of the Martinez era. The Catalan was sacked by Everton in May, and Osman believes the club made the right decision.  Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside, Osman said: “(Under Roberto) it was pleasant, it was good. There was always a good atmosphere, and we always enjoyed coming training.  “That first season was fantastic, when the feeling was good and we were winning games, but we lost our way a bit in the next two seasons.  “It was disappointing, and the way things developed was probably right. We needed to look for a new manager and that’s what we did.”
Osman has not spoken to Martinez’s successor in the hotseat. But as his former teammates returned to training at Finch Farm, the twice-capped England international said he believes the Dutchman will prove to be a good capture.  “Its a good appointment,” he said. “If I was picking myself, I’d want a guy with Premier League experience. He’s done a good job at Southampton, and he’d have been near the top of the list. Time will tell, but he looks like he has all the attributes to succeed.  “If this was his first job in management, you’d have the utmost respect for him due to his playing career. But he’s done well as a manager too.  “The players will have a lot of respect for him, and from what it looks it’ll be a good appointment.   Osman added: “I’m excited. The new owner (majority shareholder) has come in and seems to be offering a lot of money for transfers. Then there’s the influx of money from the TV.

“Look at Newcastle who have gone down and are spending £12m on a player. There seems to be money. We should be getting that as well. It certainly looks like the future is bright.”  Osman also revealed he had been working with former Everton fitness coach Dave Billows in a bid to keep up his sharpness as he ponders his next move.  “There has been interest,” he said. “The people who look after me are sorting out what’s best for me. Once thats decided we’ll go from there.  “At this point I just want to play football. I’m 35 and want to finish my career having played. If that is in the Premier League, so be it. If not, I’d happily drop down.”

Stones poised for Man City move after telling Everton he wants to join Guardiola - reports

Pep Guardiola has made Everton and England defender John Stones one of his top targets this summer
John Stones has told Everton he wants to join Manchester City – according to reports.
The England international is set to become Pep Guardiola’s third major signing after informing Goodison Park chiefs he plans to leave.  The Sun report that he has set his heart on a move to the Etihad – opening the door to a British record transfer for a defender, with the 22-year-old valued at £45m-plus.  City chief executive Ferran Soriano revealed this week that he was closing in on two more signings, following the captures of Ilkay Gundogan and Nolito.  Guardiola is determined to sign a top class centre back this summer – targeting Stones and Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte.  Laporte opted to sign a new deal in Spain – but City were always hopeful of landing Stones.  As exclusively revealed by MEN Sport last November, Everton privately accept the former Barnsley player will leave this summer if a club meets their asking price.  Elsewhere Toro News claim City have offered £15m for Torino’s Brazilian right back Bruno Peres, while Turkish outfit AMK report that Galatasaray want to take Jason Denayer on another season-long loan.

Wales skipper's emotional tribute to Gary Speed

Ashley Williams - "he is always in the back of our minds"
WALES skipper Ashley Williams delivered an emotional tribute to former Everton skipper and Wales boss Gary Speed on the eve of their country’s biggest ever international match.
The Dragons face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Lyon tonight in the European Championship semi-final.
It is the latest step in a journey set in motion by Speed, who raised Wales from 117th to 45th in the FIFA rankings, earning the award of ‘Best Movers’ of the year having gained more ranking points than any other nation in 2011.  Speed died tragically in November that year, and skipper Williams said: “I have been thinking about Gary on the plane coming over.  “My thought as we got here was I hope he’d be proud of us with what we’ve achieved.  “He has seen us grow up and he is always in the back of our minds. When we achieve something as a group, we think about him.”  Speed’s name has been sung by supporters at every game in France, while his dad Roger has been mobbed in bars.
Manager Chris Coleman – a long-time friend of Speed – added: “Speedo’s legacy is 85 caps for Wales, and maybe over 50 as a captain, plus his 10 games as a manager in which he won five and showed great promise as a young manager.  “He’s not just a Welsh icon but a sporting icon and that’s why we remember him.  “But I don’t need a game of football for me to remember Speeds. I think about him every day, not just because I’m at a tournament. I don’t need Wales football to remind me of my friend.
“He could be sitting here where I am, enjoying what we’re enjoying, unfortunately that was taken away. We always remember Speeds, whatever happens.”  Wales will hope to continue to do the former captain and midfielder proud by repeating the level of performances shown throughout the tournament against Portugal tonight.

Everton players told they will have to match Ronald Koeman's work ethic in training

New goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg worked with Koeman and backroom staff last season
New goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has warned the Everton squad that Ronald Koeman will work them very hard in training.  The 33-year-old has worked with the Blues boss on two separate occasions, first at Ajax and again last season at Southampton where he was on loan.  Koeman has brought brother Erwin and fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg with him from the south coast, as well as adding Feyenoord goalkeeper coach Patrick Lodewijks to his backroom staff.  And Stekelenburg says Koeman and his team will insist on Everton’s players having the same work ethic as them.
“I worked with them all last year [at Southampton],” said Stekelenburg.
“They are a team, all Dutch. The players will have to get used to the Dutch language!
“They are really friendly and are the same as Ronald - hard-working.”
But Stekelenburg is working with Lodewijks for the first time.
“He was the goalkeeper coach at Feyenoord. I’m from Ajax so there was a little bit of rivalry!” he said.
Ronald Koeman era exciting Everton players, says Phil Jagielka  “He was also working with the national team and has a good reputation. I’ve met him a couple of times, he’s a nice guy and I’m looking forward to working with him.”  Everton signed Stekelenburg from Fulham on a three-year deal last week and the Holland international is delighted with the move.  “I want to play as much as possible and to give everything for the club and the fans,” he added.   “It’s nice to be staying longer than one year. The three-year deal is something I’m happy with “There’s new staff here as well - I’m familiar with most of them. I’m looking forward to getting the season started.”

Gary Speed's dad saluted by Wales fans on streets of Lyon

Poignant moment as Roger Speed is recognised by Wales fans in Lyon
Gary Speed's dad, Roger, has been receiving the same kind of reception in France which used to be reserved for his son.  Father of the former Everton skipper, Roger, has been in France with Gary's sons Ed and Tom.  And ahead of tonight's landmark Wales match against Portugal in Lyon, in the semi-final of the European Championship, the Welsh fans have paid a poignant tribute to Roger.  Nearly five years after the death of Gary in November, 2011, there were tears and emotion as Mr Speed and a group of Wales fans embraced after supporters spontaneously chanted the name of the former Wales boss after spotting Roger.  Roger has been overwhelmed by the reception they have received from Wales supporters in France, saying: "What a reception. He'd have been proud.  "We were in the restaurant and I went to the window and all the Welsh fans were singing, they were chanting my name and I was in tears.  "They really are fantastic supporters, the best in the world."  BBC broadcaster Caroline Barker, who filmed the footage, tweeted: "Roger Speed being mobbed by fans in Lyon. Hugs, tears, brilliant."

Everton to play at Goodison in revamped EFL Trophy next season

By Phil Kirkbride
Blues confirmed as one of 16 invited sides in new-look competition to start in August
EVERTON have been officially confirmed as one of 16 sides invited into the revamped Football League Trophy - and will play at least one game at Goodison.  The EFL Trophy, which replaces the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, has been shaken up for the 2016/17 season.  This season 64 clubs will take part in the competition which now includes a regionalised group stage which begins in late August.  Everton, who are being joined by academy sides from Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in the EFL Trophy, will play one home game at Goodison during the group stage.  The 16 groups are made up of four teams - one of the invited clubs plus at least one club from both League One and League Two - with the top two sides qualifying for the knockout stages.  Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and an additional point is up for grabs in games that finish level with penalty shoot-outs to take place.
Revamped English Football League Trophy
Everton and all of the invited clubs must ensure that at least six of their starting 11 are under the age of 21 as of June 30 this year.  But it is understood that the Blues intend on fielding sides made up almost entirely of their Academy players.   Everton have lobbied for the inclusion of B-teams in the Football League pyramid and though the new-look EFL Trophy falls short of that, it is still seen as a step in the right direction.  The knockout stages (round of 32) will remain regionalised before the draw for the competition opens up thereafter.  Wembley will once again host the final on April 2.
And as part of the EFL’s announcement today, they have announced that during the group stage, Everton will have to donate 45% of their gate receipt to the overall prize fund.   The 16 clubs with Category One Academies invited to play in the EFL Trophy are: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United.

Jonjoe Kenny, Callum Connolly and Ryan Ledson get call up for tournament in Germany
EVERTON trio Jonjoe Kenny, Callum Connolly and Ryan Ledson have been named in the England squad for this month’s European Championships.  The Three Lions’ under-19 side head for Germany where they will face France, Croatia and Holland in the group stage.
Kenny, Connolly and Ledson joined up with England boss Aidy Boothroyd over the weekend for the third and final pre-tournament training camp.  It was after those sessions that Boothroyd finalised his 18-man squad for the tournament, which runs form July 11-24.
The Everton players will only miss one of the Blues’ first-team pre-season friendlies but will be on international duty when both the senior squad and the under-21s jet off for warm weather training camps.  Everton’s u-21 pre-season fixtures are yet to be finalised but they have entered the Super CupNI where they will face Benfica, Celtic and Real Sociedad on July 24-29.

Leeds interested in Everton old-boy Leon Osman

Blues released out-of-contract veteran midfielder last month
Everton's Leon Osman and Tony Hibbert celebrate a goal - no prizes for guessing who who the scorer was.  LEEDS UNITED have sounded out Leon Osman over a move to Elland Road.  The 35-year-old midfielder was released by Everton after Ronald Koeman confirmed he would not be offered a new deal.
Osman wants to keep playing in the Premier League but has confirmed he is open to the idea of dropping down to the Championship.  Leeds are rebuilding their squad following the arrival of Garry Monk as manager and free agent Osman has been identified as a summer target.  Osman came through the ranks at Goodison and made his top flight debut in 2003.  The veteran midfielder left Everton this month having made over 400 appearances for the club but was deemed surplus to requirements in the new era under Koeman.  Osman was released alongside Tony Hibbert, Steven Pienaar and Felipe Mattioni.

How Ronald and Erwin Koeman tick - by Len Koeman
6 Jul 2016 Liverpool Echo
By Elliott Bretland
Everton coach's son outlines the working relationship between Everton boss and his brother
“Football is in the Koeman DNA,” says Len, nephew of new Everton boss Ronald and son of Toffees assistant Erwin. “We love the game but hate to lose. It is a Koeman thing,”  When it comes to football, winning is all that matters to the Koeman clan.  The brothers have been charged with spearheading the Farhad Moshiri revolution at Goodison Park, and Len, who knows the pair better than anyone and is a former professional himself, expects the duo to be a success after leaving Southampton for Merseyside this summer.  “They want to achieve,” he exclusively told the Echo. “They have a new owner, the budget is over £100million and so they can buy better players than they did at Southampton, who I don’t think have that money to invest (on players).  “Everton is a big club and it is a new adventure, a new dawn.”
Earning a place in the Europa League having guided the Saints into the top six after taking over from Mauricio Pochettino in 2014, Southampton fans were miffed and unimpressed with Ronald Koeman’s decision to leave for an Everton side that finished the last campaign in the bottom half.  However, while Koeman has upset sections of the Southampton support, Len believes it would have been difficult for his uncle to replicate such success with the St Mary’s club considering they were again expected to cash in on their prized assets this summer. Already, before July, Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama have been sold for a combined £41million.  “Before they went there, Pochettino came eighth and everybody said: ‘Wow, this is amazing.’ Then, two years in a row, they did even better than the season before,” he said.
“I think it would be really difficult to achieve better with Southampton. They would have to be fifth (to improve on the 15/16 campaign) which is maybe difficult if you sell your best players.”
Len insists his uncle and father are very much a double act rather than a strict leader and deputy and believes they will play an almost equal role in taking charge of the club.
“They do it together,” he says. “When there is training, Ronald is on the pitch and my father is on the pitch. It’s only for the outside world that Ronald is the manager and my father is the assistant. It’s just the name you give it. I think the work they do, they do really well together.”
Though the siblings will share a heavy workload at Finch Farm this season, Len feels their personalities would not allow for their roles to be reversed.  “I think Ronald is the bigger name than my father but my father is more down to earth. My uncle has a bigger ego and a different character. I won’t say my father has less ambition but, while he enjoys working, he is not the manager.  “Ronald takes the pressure from journalists and everything. My father, as assistant, goes to work with the players and after that he goes home and is relaxed but Ronald, all the time, has the pressure as the manager. All the time, when you lose three games in a row, the pressure is on him and not on my father. He (Erwin) has the pressure but not from the people outside.  “My father can be the assistant of Ronald but Ronald could not be the assistant to my father.”  Everton enter the new campaign having endured two hugely disappointing seasons in the under Koeman’s predecessor, Roberto Martinez, who insisted heavily on an attacking style of play which included bringing the ball out from the back.  While the Toffees’ defence suffered as a result of Martinez’s insistence on expansive football, Len expects the Blues will still play on the front foot under the Dutch pair but amass many more clean sheets this time around.
“When you have the ball, it is offensive,” he said of the Koeman style of play. “They like to play forward. When the team doesn’t have the ball, they like to keep pressure on the ball and play forward.
“Every team my father and uncle coaches, the defence is well-organised and from that they want to play attacking football.”   Koeman Jr is convinced the Toffees squad will fulfil their obvious potential compared to recent seasons and is buoyed by the opening fixtures.  Though Everton face Tottenham on the opening day, they then avoid all of the big boys in their next six fixtures.  “Everton is a club with history and everything,” insists Len. “If you look at the team right now, the players there, I think they can do better than last season. Hopefully it will keep positive.  “The first seven games or so, you have to get a lot of points. Then you have a flying start and you never know what will happen.”  Of the current Everton crop, Ross Barkley stands out for Len: “He is a young player, physically strong, can score a goal,” and it is understood the boyhood Blue will have a major role to play under the new regime.
Ronald Koeman will be hoping for success on Merseyside, though he and his older brother have already enjoyed countless triumphs during their respective 35-year playing careers and are renowned and respected in their homeland.  “Everybody knows the Koeman name in Holland,” says Len, whose grandfather Martin earned one Dutch cap before his two sons won the European Championship together in 1988 alongside Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard.  However, while Ronald is the star attraction having scored an iconic winner to lift the European Cup with Barcelona in 1992, Erwin won the Cup Winners Cup with Belgian side Mechelen four years previously and Len backs his Dad when it came to ability.  “My father, I think he was the bigger talent, the better player, but they made different decisions. Ronald played for Ajax and Barcelona while my father went to PSV and then to Mechelen.  “He (Ronald) played in the Champions League final against Sampdoria and I think you will remember it, the free-kick, and so people all over the world remember Ronald because of that.”
Despite their careers taking different paths, Len says the two brothers have always shared a special bond.  “They are really close. Before they worked together, Ronald was a football player and my father was a football player so they couldn’t see each other that much - probably only on the birthdays of the children - but now they are working together, they see each other every day so the relationship has become much more intense.”  Len is the third generation of his family to play professionally but saw his career cruelly cut short by a series of knee ligament injuries following spells with PSV as a youth and the Helmond Sport first-team. Following retirement, he now studies in Amsterdam while presenting videos for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and working behind the camera at Fox Sports.  Having coached a number of clubs since hanging up his boots in 1997, there is one club Ronald is particularly fond of: Barcelona.  Winning the La Liga title four times with the Catalan giants and one Copa del Rey in the early nineties, Koeman was assistant at the Nou Camp between 1998 and 2000 and lists the stadium as his favourite.
Koeman with the European Cup
So, is a return to Barca the long-term aim for the Dutchman?
“Barcelona is one of the biggest clubs in the world,” says Len. “He was a player at Barcelona and had great success over there and I think it is still a dream for him to be manager of Barcelona.
“I think everybody wants to be the manager of Barcelona. He has a special feeling with the club and the city so that’s why people are saying for Ronald it is a dream become the coach of Barcelona.”
Right now though, Ronald and Erwin are on Merseyside and harbour giant ambitions.
Two hugely respected footballing names have joined forces and both the Koemans and Everton will be desperate for success. It’s in the DNA.

Ex-Everton man snapped up by Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Danish former Blue joins Old Trafford staff
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has snapped up a former Everton man and it's the Dane brought to the Blues by Walter Smith.  Before you jaws drop to the floor at the prospect of Thomas Gravesen heading to Old Trafford, it's not him - Tommy is still presumably in Las Vegas spending his millions - but compatriot Tommy Møller Nielsen, who worked for Smith at both Ibrox and Goodison Park as a scout.
Thomas Gravesen

The 54-year-old, who is the son of the late Richard Møller Nielsen who coached Denmark to their shock victory in the 1992 European Championship finals, has been plucked by the Red Devils from the football backwater of Mongolia where Sport Witness claim he had been offered the chance to become national team coach.
Møller Nielsen told Denmark’s Politiken: “I’ve got a very good agreement with Manchester United, who will spend more money on scouting and expand the staff by 15, engaged in full-time positions and working across the world.  “I am a coach and wanted to coach again, but it is a very exciting and interesting job, I need to start. I get to work with football at the highest level and I am very pleased.”

Blues Welsh ace featured on cult radio quiz
As Wales' heroes finally bowed out of Euro 2016, they can at least take solace from the sparkling performance of their former Everton midfielder Barry Horne on Danny Baker's cult Sausage Sandwich Game on BBC Radio 5 live.  Chris Coleman's side failed in their bid to reach the final of the European Championships with a 2-0 defeat to Portugal in Lyon.  However, our ECHO columnist was on form as he chatted with the Millwall-supporting host about Wales' exploits in France in what is their first international tournament since the 1958 World Cup. Click here to listen  Baker quipped that England's players – humiliated by their second round exit to minnows Iceland – should haul Wales' open top bus physically on ropes through the streets of Cardiff.  He told Horne: “That's the only way we can have closure on this, it's the only cathartic thing and I mean that.”  The pair also discussed Horne's post-football career as a chemistry teacher but for those who know the game, the burning topic was the Goodison icon's condiment choice when eating a sausage sandwich and whether he plumps for red sauce, brown sauce or no sauce at all.  Below is a version of the questions Horne was asked. See if you can get them all right.

Everton transfer rumours: Stones set for £50million move to Manchester City

Blues won't sell star defender unless mega rich rivals stump up the cash
England player John Stones arriving back at Manchester Airport following England's embarrassing Euro 2016 defeat by Iceland - at least the Everton defender wasn't tarnished by getting on the pitch during the finals, along with Blues team-mate Ross Barkley  A record-breaking £50million move to Manchester City is on the cards for John Stones after the defender told Everton chiefs he wants to leave say the Daily Express.  The Blues are determined to hold on to one their most prized assets just as they were last summer when then-Premier League champions Chelsea came calling and are under no financial obligation to sell.    New majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri has supposedly handed new manager Ronald Koeman a transfer war chest of over £100million and the club's ambitions have reputedly already convinced ace marksman Romelu Lukaku to stay but England international Stones has supposedly made up his mind that his future lies elsewhere.  Everton are hoping that Stones can stay and learn under the guidance of Koeman, who was football's ultimate ball-playing centre-back during his own playing days and are adamant they will not part with the 22-year-old Yorkshireman unless mega rich City cough up his full asking price which would smash their own £31.8million record paid for Eliaquim Mangala in 2014 for the most expensive defender bought by a British club.
New City boss Pep Guardiola is a big admirer of Stones and has earmarked him as his number one defensive target but the club are also pursuing Juventus' Italian international Leonardo Bonucci having had an opening bid of £38.4million rejected.   Meanwhile, the Express also say that Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up their options after Newcastle United slapped a £25million price tag on attacking midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.  Despite the Magpies relegation to the Championship, they are insisting that they do not need to sell the Dutch international who they bought for £14.5million a year ago and are demanding an inflated valuation on his head.

Personal video message from Blues midfielder clinched the deal
Everton's Mo Mesic in action at Selhurst Park
UNDECIDED football fan Aldin Karabeg has made up his mind on his future affiliation - after a little nudge from Everton midfielder Mo Besic!  The Bosnian supporter emailed all 92 Football League clubs to ask for advice on who he should support.  Only 10 replied - and Everton’s response was the most thorough and detailed.  But it seemed that Aldin was still edging towards the homespun League Two charms of Barnet, until Bosnian international sent the supporter a personal video message.
Aldin quickly emailed back and wrote: “I’ll be glad and proud to consider myself an Everton fan in the future. Hopefully, as Muhamed said, one day I’ll be able to visit Goodison Park and cheer the squad myself.”  Aldin’s initial request and the responses he gathered were seen by hundreds of thousands of readers on Reddit, with several British newspapers and radio stations then taking up the story.
But Aldin has now made up his mind. He's just got to work out how to get tickets for games now with Everton posting record-breaking sales figures for the coming season!

Blues' games with Sunderland and Middlesbrough have been altered
Two of Everton’s September fixtures will be shown live on television.
Sky Sports and BT Sport have this morning announced the first raft of changes to the schedule for the opening two months of the season.  The Blues’ opening three games of the new Premier League campaign remain unaffected but the trip to Sunderland - their first game following the close of the transfer window - and home game with Middlesbrough have been altered.   Everton were due to travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday, September 10 but that has now been put back to Monday, September 12 and will kick-off at 8pm.
Sky Sports will broadcast.
And five days later on September 17, the Blues home game against newly promoted Boro will now kick-off at 5:30pm, instead of 3pm, and be shown live on BT Sport.  Everton have also confirmed that their trip to Southampton in late November has been put back 24 hours to Sunday, November 27 due to the Saints’ involvement in the Europa League that week.  No kick-off time for that fixture has been announced.

Everton supporters on social media have jumped to congratulate Ramiro Funes Mori after the defender shared an image from his wedding.  The Argentine joined the Blues in September 2015 - becoming the most expensive defender the club has ever signed at £9.5 million.  Funes Mori made 28 appearances last season for the Blues, filling in for both Phil Jagielka and John Stones at different periods throughout the campaign.  The 25-year-old quickly gained quite a cult following amongst Everton supporters on social media, not least because of his knee-sliding goal celebration - which is boss, let's be honest.
Because of that, when the defender shared a picture from his wedding day on his Twitter account - Everton fans were quick to offer their congratulations to the happy couple.

Is this Everton boss Koeman's big hint to Romelu Lukaku?

Everton are determined to keep hold of Lukaku with Koeman keen to build attack around him
Koeman in his new office
New Everton manager Ronald Koeman has already settled into his office at Finch Farm as he nears the end of his first week at work.  As the Dutchman runs the rules over his new players in training, he has not yet had the chance to work with Everton's Euro 2016 contingent.  The most high-profile of whom, Romelu Lukaku , is currently holidaying in New York as he unwinds following Belgium's exit from the competition.  Lukaku's Goodison future has been the subject of endless speculation since March when the striker admitted he wanted to leave for Champions League football.
But Koeman seems determined to keep hold of the want-away forward, who netted 25 times last term, and this snapshot of his office could provide a hint to his thinking.  It may be totally unconnected of course, but a Lukaku shirt hangs behind the manager as he gave an interview to the club's official website yesterday.  Maybe Koeman wants to emphasise that the former Chelsea forward, who is rumoured to be considering the prospect of staying put , is very much part of his plans for his first season in charge.

Everton's Ramiro Funes Mori available for start of season after turning down Olympic offer

Blues defender not included in Argentina's 18-man squad for Rio Games
Ramiro Funes Mori will be available for the start of Everton’s season after being omitted from Argentina’s Olympic squad.  Reports earlier in the week claimed that the Blues defender was ready to turn down the chance to play at the Rio Games next month.  And last night the 25-year-old was confirmed as not in Argentina’s 18-man squad for the competition.  Had Funes Mori been included then he would have missed the beginning of the season. Everton face Spurs on Saturday, August 13 before a game at West Bromwich Albion seven days later.  The Olympic football tournament lasts from August 3-20.  But after an official annoucement from the Argentinean FA, Funes Mori will be available for key pre-season fixtures and the start of the first season under Ronald Koeman.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman explains why Duncan Ferguson is vital part of coaching staff

Blues hero Ferguson retains coaching role in new regime at Goodison under Koeman
Duncan Ferguson is an “important” member of Everton’s new-look backroom staff, says boss Ronald Koeman.  Big Dunc was part of Roberto Martinez’s coaching team and has been retained under Koeman.
The Dutchman believes it is vital to have a coach, who is steeped in the club’s history, as part of his team.  Ferguson joins Koeman’s brother Erwin, fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg and goalkeeper coach Patrick Lodewijks in the dugout at Goodison.
Duncan Ferguson will remain on Everton staff as Blues edge closer to Koeman appointment
“I am very pleased that Duncan Ferguson is the last member in our technical staff,” Koeman said.
“That is good because I like to have somebody in the club who really is an Evertonian man with a big history in the club.
Generous Everton hero Duncan Ferguson: 'I've always felt a big part of the community'
“He knows the club and I think that’s a very good and important reason to have him in.”

Opinion: Everton and the Growing Pains of the Newly-rich

Greg O'Keeffe on the perception challenge Everton face in the transfer market this summer
Everton might have to bide their time this summer
It's early days in this summer's transfer market but Everton already seem in the grip of a newly bracing dilemma.  The Blues are having to cope with the growing pains of the Nouveau riche .  Note the rather blunt assessment of an intermediary, (agent to you and I), of sought-after midfield target Axel Witsel : "Everton might even go above €4m net in salary," said Francesco Marseglia.  “If you look at the financial aspect, that’s the right move, but in terms of career I’d choose Napoli every time, even putting the Champions League to one side.  “Napoli are an ambitious club, they’re growing every year, always taking more important players.  "Everton don’t seem like a great team.”  Ouch.  Just one man's opinion of course, indeed maybe Senor Marselgia has a soft spot for Naples, but either way it can be construed as sobering.   Because while Everton have a wallet bursting with cash, they may currently resemble an over-night Lotto millionaire drawing disapproving looks from Old-money gentry at a Sotheby's auction.
Farhad Moshiri's backing has transformed their financial potential, but not yet their reputation.
Leaving aside the 'big club' debate , in the context of recent seasons they're consecutive bottom half finishers in the Premier League and have never played in the Champions League.
The Toffees genuinely thought they had a chance of luring Sevilla's gilded sporting director Monchi to Merseyside this summer, but the draw of top level European football ensured he remained at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium.  Witsel negotiations continue but a mischievous piece on footballfancast.com underlines the perception challenge they could face in some quarters.  Under the curiously didactic headline 'Why Premier League Clubs must not let Axel Witsel move to Everton' the ensuing comment reads:  'Axel Witsel to Everton is just a sign of how the Premier League is changing financially.
'A player who has previously been linked with moves to some of Europe’s biggest names is set to move to a club that can hardly even break the window in to the top half of the Premier League.
'The Belgian has featured regularly at the European Championships and, despite spending several seasons there, the Zenit man looks set to have a move to the Premier League pencilled in for this summer.
Napoli are also interested in signing Axel Witsel from Zenit
'Everton would obviously be ecstatic if they could pull off such a notable coup this summer and would be willing to shatter their transfer record for the privilege.  'However, a player of this class is highly-desired around Europe. On that note, Premier League clubs are, on the whole, absolutely desperate for central midfielders.'  On it goes in rather subjective fashion.  Point made though, 'Why would Witsel go to Goodison?'  It remains the stick being used to beat the Blues over their desire to keep Romelu Lukaku .Despite only flickering into form during the Euros, there is a school of thought that he is 'better' than Everton and must leave to bolster his career.   Yet few are now surprised that a potential whopping wage increase courtesy of Mr Moshiri is reportedly giving the Belgian and his motor-mouth adviser Mino Raiola second thoughts.   The challenge for Everton, without European football, a shiny new stadium or a host of world-class names already on the books, is to sell a dream.  That will be the club's pitch this summer.  To persuade targets to believe in the scope of Moshiri and Koeman's vision. The, excuse the dreaded term, project .  The crude short-hand by which to focus minds on the seriousness of such a venture is with mind-boggling amounts of money.  ewcastle owner Mike Ashley was determined to land Newcastle's targets  Everton aren't the first club to experience the early throes of such growing pains.
Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is no pauper but when it was mooted that even his big money offers were falling on deaf ears because top players preferred to live in London, he once reportedly mooted moving the Magpies training base to the capital.  Manchester City weren't able to immediately land every big name they bid for back in 2008 and had to settle for a world-class (ish) curio in the capture of Robinho during their first post-Mansour transfer window.
Robhino was a notable signing for the then newly-rich City It took time for their stature to develop despite the cheque book's bulge.  Everton are talking to numerous agents right now. Koeman has set his sights sky-high when it comes to targets .  But the Blues must accept the frustrating factor of football's 'natural order' wanting to keep them in their place.  They must suck it up and find a way around it.
Equally their supporters must realise that the truly big names may not arrive this summer but next. Money talks, but even Champions Leicester City may find that shifting perceptions requires patience.
Everton will be in for anyone they want this summer, but in the parlance of the mega-rich theirs isn't the only super-yacht docked in Monaco.

Revealed: Why Everton fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg uses state-of-the-art technology in pre-season training sessions

Blues crunch the numbers to ensure each player reaches peak condition
Fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg is using state-of-the-art technology to shape Everton’s pre-season programme.  The Blues coach and the club’s sports science team put the squad through a series of tests to assess their condition when they returned to Finch Farm on Monday.  Training was stepped up on Tuesday and Wednesday with the players made to perform a series of running drills.  But throughout the sessions, Kluitenberg and Everton’s backroom staff are analysing the state of each player’s fitness using data supplied by special equipment.  The Blues have used STATSport technology for the past four seasons and it allows Kluitenberg and his staff to tailor each player’s fitness programme.
Everton’s squad can often be seen wearing STATSport’s black vests during training sessions and they include a matchbox-sized GPS tracking device, situated between the shoulder blades, called a Viper Pod.
It transmits basic information such as distance covered and top speeds reached as well as more complex data which shows fatigue levels, the different intensity runs and the stress load each player undertakes during a session.   During the season, Everton’s use of STATSport equipment continues and allows the coaching staff to ensure each players has the enough training between matches, without putting themselves at risk of injury.  Each player has their own GPS device and club staff can set limits in a number of fitness fields and when a player is set to reach the threshold in a particular area (ie distance covered) then a warning light flashes on their laptops.  Kluitenberg is well versed in STATSport’s equipment as it was used at his former club Southampton.
Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester City and Arsenal are among the other clubs that use the technology and Lionel Messi wore the black vests during a couple of La Liga games last season.
There remain plans for Everton players to do the same.
